Neptunes prevail over Sliema

Neptunes Grimaldi again drew on a sound rearguard and opportunistic scoring expertise to assert their unquestioned superiority over Sliema Betsson who once again looked frail, shot shy and devoid of firepower. In a low-key match which hardly enthused the crowd, the 7-3 scoreline in the Reds’ favour was evidence of the clear disparity between the two sides. The Blues were unable to make any sort of impact on their tactically disciplined opponents for whom extreme defender Alan Borg Cole again played a blinder followed by the tireless Niki Lanzon and the intelligent Miguel Zammit. Sliema’s failure to prise open Neptunes’ labyrinth, including seven extra-man sets, reflected a serious lack of potent play. By contrast, Neptunes did not lack this quality as was evident at crucial moments when they scored. On the downside the Reds only netted twice from eight numerical advantages, but that did not really matter. Marco Cuk, shadowed mostly by Steve Camilleri, was once more unable to find the net while the Neptunes free-scoring stalwart helped himself to a hat-trick. The Blues could not quite stem the tide that was inexorably flowing against them as the Balluta team, as usual using less...

San Ġiljan’s Matthew Zammit shoots at goal during a league match.

The first phase of the BOV Premier Division is over, with the six teams divided into the top and bottom pools set to fight it out for the final placings. The title play-offs over two rounds between defending champions San Ġiljan, league leaders Neptunes and Sliema will certainly generate some keen encounters. The Reds and the Saints are six and five points, respectively, ahead of the Blues, with each team having four matches to play. In the first round there was a freak 15-5 Neptunes’ win over San Ġiljan, followed by the two leading teams’ five-goal victory margins when they faced Sliema in the second round. The other three matches involving these title contenders were drawn. While San Ġiljan and Sliema could rely on longer and homogeneous squads bar some occasional absences, Neptunes have so far confounded many despite having just about eight reliable units in their standard formation. Unlike most of the other coaches who could spread their resources during the matches, Neptunes coach Zoran Maslovar rarely went deep into his squad’s tail except on very few occasions when victory had already been secured. His strong core philosophy has so far been a winning card. Tha Saints’...

Brisk Exiles taste success

This was by all accounts a brisk Exiles Jet Freight performance which helped them break their duck in no uncertain manner when disposing of Valletta McDonald’s 14-10 in yesterday’s second play-off in the bottom pool. The team from Sliema were full worth their victory as they employed the right tactics to annul anything the erstwhile careless Valletta side could throw at them. The winners were very diligent in their marking of Valletta’s danger man Dmitrii Kholod, taking it in turns to shadow the Russian very strictly when he was within shooting range. Moreover, the opportunism of Dorian Pisani’s team and the scoring traits of the powerful left-hander Milos Vukicevic, who netted a nap-hand of goals, could only leave the City team reacting in spasms. After going initially in front through Ryan Mock, Valletta collapsed, and were constantly in arrears by three or four goals, only to close the deficit to a couple of goals once in the last quarter. Three goals by the dependable Kurt Grixti and two each from Julian Rizzo Naudi and Kayne Lanzon helped Exiles’s cause and kept Valletta in a precarious position especially after Michael Rizzo was excluded with substitution two minutes from...

Neptunes Grimaldi face a tricky test against Sirens Ritter Sport in the KO semi-finals this weekend. Photo: Chris Sant Fournier

San Ġiljan Salini Resort and Balluta Bay neighbours Neptunes Grimaldi start favourites to contest the BOV KO showdown later this month when they play Relegation Pool opponents in this weekend’s semi-finals at Tal-Qroqq. Holders San Ġiljan should meet little difficulty in eliminating Premier Division wooden spoonists Exiles Jetfreight this evening as Neptunes face a tricky test against Sirens Ritter Sport tomorrow. In championship matches this summer, San Ġiljan had two easy rides on Exiles following clear wins of 19-10 and 13-7. On Wednesday, Dorian Pisani’s Exiles broke their duck in the Premier Division after chalking up their first win of the season following a 14-10 victory over Valletta McDonald’s. The Saints sustained their chances of repeating their 2015 double feat when beating Sliema Betsson 12-4 in the quarter-finals late last month as Exiles earned a bye to the last-four stage of the competition. Sirens, who last won the KO back in 2006, gave Neptunes a good run for their money in the league following a 9-9 draw before losing the second game with a narrow margin of two goals – 8-6. However, the St Paul’s Bay team failed to make the Championship Pool this summer and...

Marsaxlokk claim final spot

Neptunes Grimaldi have become well-steeped in making minimum use of the units at their disposal and at the same time drawing the maximum from their established guns however long they are in the water. In yesterday’s second knock-out semi-final they added the scalp of Sirens Ritter Sport when beating them 12-7 thus earning the right to meet neighbours and holders San Ġiljan in the final on Saturday, August 27. This was again another clinical performance from the Balluta team which saw them carrying more threat when in possession. Invariably, their chief marksmen, were four-goal Stevie... Unbeaten US women face Hungary in waterpolo SFs

World champions US women’s waterpolo team won a spot in the Olympic semi-finals by overwhelming home team Brazil on Monday, prevailing 13-3 and moving a step closer to defending their London Games title. In today’s semi-finals, the US will face Hungary, who edged out Australia by winning a penalty shoot-out following an 8-8 draw. Russia’s women advanced with a 12-10 win over Spain and will next face Italy, who reached the last four with a 12-7 victory over China. The United States and Italy are the only women’s teams yet to lose in the tournament but it was the US line-up that produced the most dominant display as they lived up to their status as gold medal favourites. After three US wins in the group round, where the team beat Spain, China and Hungary, they faced their easiest game yet against Brazil. Californian Makenzie Fischer, 19, helped to lead the charge with two goals, and was one of eight US players to score in the first half without reply. “Everyone is ready to step up and take a shot,” Fischer said. The US may face a tougher opponent in their next game. Hungary came back from a 5-3 first-half deficit against Australia, to even the score in the last quarter and go on...

Valletta outgun Sirens

Valletta McDonald’s are fast earning the tag of a yo-yo team this season after a series of mixed results. This was none more evident than in their last two matches when they lost 13-5 to Sirens in the knock-out and then contrived to bow to bottom team Exiles by a four-goal margin. Yesterday, however, they completely reversed this negative trend with a faultless display that blew apart a hitherto sorry Sirens who were completely outgunned. Although Valletta were always in front, once in the third session by three goals, their opponents’ collapse came mainly in the last session when the City team had taken a reassuring 9-4 lead with under two minutes left. That ninth goal brought a violent reaction from Sirens’ goalkeeper Nicholas Grixti who was excluded without substitution. Valletta then went on to round up their victory with two more goals. A feature of the game was the tight duel between Valletta’s Dmitrii Kholod and Sirens’ Sergi Mora, a tussle which in the end was won by the Russian who scored twice to Mora’s single strike. Otherwise Stephen Rizzo’s team had a clear edge as goalkeeper Ryan Sciortino provided the inspiration and James Spiteri Staines the bulk of goals...

Croatia to defend title in waterpolo final

Croatia remain on course for back-to-back golds after defeating Montenegro 12-8 in the first men’s water polo semi-final to clinch a spot in tomorrow’s gold-medal match. In a hard-fought match notable for aggressive grappling close to the goals, the Olympic title-holders’ win owed much to deft goalkeeping, and an almost impregnable defence. Goalkeeper Marko Bijak made several crucial blocks to deny Montenegro’s prolific shooters, saving 10 of 18 shots on goal. Though Croatia’s attack took fewer shots, they were more often on the money. Croatia’s Andro Buslje scored four times – an 80 per cent success rate. Montenegro’s goalkeepers, by contrast, saved only two of 14 shots during the match. “It’s always the most important part of the game,” Croatian goalkeeper Bijak said of his team’s superior defences on Thursday. “(Montenegro) have a few very good shooters.” The victory takes Croatia within one win of retaining the title they won in London in 2012 and becoming just the fourth team in the 116-year Olympic history of the sport to win back-to-back gold medals. Only Great Britain, Hungary and the former Yugoslavia – of which Croatia formed a part - have accomplished the...

San Ġiljan remain in hot pursuit

The two-horse battle between champions San Ġiljan Salini Resort and neighbours Neptunes still rages on. By virtue of a clear-cut 11-5 win over Sliema Betsson the Saints kept breathing down the necks of their Balluta neighbours in their bid to retain the big prize of Maltese waterpolo. Again San Ġiljan were full worth their victory with seven of their goals coming from Boris Vapenski and a brace each from their young talent Andreas Galea and powerful left-hander Matthew Zammit. The Blues just could not live with their opponents, despite twice going ahead early on, only for the side guided by Marko Orlovic to turn it round by the end of the first quarter. Sliema, without two useful cogs, centre Jerome Gabarretta and utility player Nicholas Bugelli, fell apart after ends were changed, with the Saints 5-3 ahead and still not on solid territory. In any case, the Blues only had prestige as their prime mover after they had lost their slim chance of making up the leeway for the title following their last defeat against Neptunes. The Saints nailed it in the third session which they won 3-0 to make it 8-3 into the last quarter. The Blues somehow battled on but could only finish wellbeaten...

Title rivals Neptunes, Saints clash again with KO at stake

Renewing hostilities...Neptunes and San Ġiljan will face each other in the BOV KO final this evening. Photo: Mark Zammit Cordina

The first major honour of the 2016 summer season will be decided tonight when holders San Ġiljan Salini Resort clash with rivals Neptunes Grimaldi in the BOV Knock-Out final at the National Pool. The Premier Division showdown is the highlight of today’s programme which also comprises the finals of the First Division and women’s Knock-Out competitions. For San Ġiljan, the cup now represents their best chance of silverware this season as their hopes of retaining the league title are hanging by a thread. A 10-6 defeat to Neptunes last Tuesday  left Marko Orlovic’s men four points behind their Balluta Bay rivals with only two matches left to play. Surely, San Ġiljan must up their game significantly against the in-form Neptunes if they are to capture their ninth KO title. Last year, the Saints relied on their collective acumen and resilience to edge out Neptunes 13-12 in a thrilling final. Orlovic will demand more from his team, especially his leading players as Serbian Boris Vapenski only managed one goal in the league defeat to Neptunes while captain Matthew Zammit failed to get his name on the scoresheet. The Saints could only convert three of nine extra-man sets besides missing a...

San Ġiljan’s redemption earns them the KO title

San Ġiljan Salini Resort were on a double mission last night. That of retaining the knock-out, and thus land their eighth prize in this competition, and to seek redemption after suffering a 10-6 league defeat at the hands of Neptunes Grimaldi only four days before. Relying on their resilience, tactical diligence and newly-found spirit they accomplished their double task when defeating their neighbours 12-10 after extra time. It looked as if they would apply on their opponents a taste of Neptunes’ own medicine when in normal time they conducted play for long stretches and in so doing led the match by four goals on no fewer than four occasions. They covered extremely well to reduce Neptunes to frantic shooting, while also taking their chances well especially on their extra-man sets. Their 2-1 first session lead was extended to 6-2 by midpoint with three-goal Andreas Galea expertly slotting the goals as did Boris Vapenski. The Reds could hardly react as they suffered four double blows each within a few seconds. However, they fought back from 9-5 down in the final quarter after conceding the last goal to Clint Mercieca. It was then that the Reds finally found some punch  as they...

Neptunes on verge of title

Neptunes will be all out to beat derby rivals Sliema and seal the national league title today.

Neptunes Grimaldi are close to becoming Malta waterpolo champions for the sixth time in the last seven years and 24th in the all-time winners’ list. Victory over rivals Sliema Betsson this evening would guarantee Zoran Maslovar’s team an unassailable seven-point lead over second-placed San Ġiljan Salini Resort with only two matches left for the end of the BOV Premier League campaign. In June, many were backing San Ġiljan to repeat their feat of 2015 and retain the two major honours in the local game. The Saints, who boast a balanced and well-equipped squad, did succeed in keeping the BOV KO trophy at their club for another year as last weekend they beat Neptunes 12-10 in a tense final that required extra-time to determine the winners. However, the championship saw Neptunes performing on a more consistent level, showing great tactical cohesion and true combative qualities despite coach Maslovar having to rely on a restricted squad with very few options available to him, particularly in the tail-end zone of his group of players. So far, the Balluta Bay Reds are the only team without defeat in the top flight, winning nine matches from 12, including two fine victories over Sliema –...

Reds wrest title from Saints

It may not have been time for full scale celebrations by Neptunes Grimaldi fans yesterday but it was certainly an occasion for felicitations. The Reds’ 14-9 victory over Sliema Betsson sealed their 24th championship title, their sixth in seven years after five successive crowns between 2010 and 2014. It was the first of two port of calls, with their ship entering triumphantly amid the cheering of their supporters after wresting the title from San Ġiljan. Pre-season expectations did not suggest that the Balluta Bay team could strike league success as the squad was thin after some notable defections at the end of last season. However, under the guidance of their head coach, Zoran Maslovar, and his assistant, Igor Martinovic, the team, led by their established core players, played with aplomb, discipline and not a little resilience to outdistance outgoing champions, San Ġiljan and all other opponents. These qualities were never so evident as last night when they dismissed Sliema who had Mark Meli, John Brownrigg and Timmy Sullivan missing, with Jerome Gabarretta and Nicholas Bugelli back on duty. The formbook indicated that the Reds had enough guns and guile to beat their rivals as...

Exiles win first relegation decider

In the first of possibly three relegation deciders Exiles Jetfreight made the right start in their bid to retain their Premier Division status when they beat Marsaxlokk Fischer 13-5, yesterday. The victory was a foregone conclusion as the top division side were clearly the superior lot. Moreover, the southerners presented a decimated squad not only in terms of numbers but also because they had chief scorer Ivan Vuksanovic and utility player Ian Buhagiar absent after leaving the island, as well as Karl Galea. Marsaxlokk could only last the pace until almost midway in the second quarter when they led 2-1. After that Milos Vukicevic, eventually scorer of six goals, and Kayne Lanzon who netted a hat-trick, took over striking duties to leave their opponents puffing and panting. Exiles will achieve their objective if they beat Marsaxlokk in the second decider on Thursday. Bar statistics, yesterday’s duel between Sliema Betsson and San Ġiljan Salini Resort was of negligible importance once the destination of this year’s league title had been sealed in favour of Neptunes last Wednesday. Although one could not play down the players’ endeavours resulting in 20 goals being shared the match...

The Sliema Betsson women’s waterpolo team rounded up their season on a good note yesterday after adding the BOV championship to the BOV KO won the week before for an impressive league and cup double. Neptunes Grimaldi were this evening crowned champions of the BOV Water Polo Premier League 2016. Having already mathematically won the championship, Neptunes ended their season in style by beating last year's champions San Giljan 17-11 to win the 24th title in their history and the 8th championship in the last 11 years.

Neptunes Grimaldi and San Ġiljan will bring the Championship Pool to a close this evening.

The National Pool will be painted in red and white this evening as Neptunes Grimaldi Lines celebrate their 24th league title when they complete their summer campaign with a Championship Pool match against deposed champions San Ġiljan Salini Resort who can’t finish higher than second. The Balluta Bay Reds secured their sixth league title in the last seven years last week when they beat Sliema Betsson 14-9 to open an unassailable lead at the top of the standings. Neptunes’ feat takes on added significance considering that they had to do without some of their former star players. However, wily coach Zoran Maslovar did well to bring the best out of his squad despite having to rely on a shorter bench compared to San Ġiljan. Matthew Bonello, the Neptunes WPSC president, said the 2016 championship success was hard-earned but very special. “At the start of the season, we never thought that we could become champions again as we lost key players like Clint Mercieca and Michele Stellini while young player Sean Xerri De Caro decided to quit the game altogether,” Bonello said. “However, the decision to hire coach Igor Martinovic and focus all his attention on the youth team turned out to be...

Neptunes players and officials celebrate their title success.

As could be anticipated and as was the case last year, when the Saints had already sealed the league title before the St Julian’s teams met in what was supposed to be the showdown duel, the match between the 2016 newly-crowned champions Neptunes Grimaldi and outgoing title-holders San Ġiljan Salini Resort did not go a long way in terms of motivation. At the very most, the team guided by Marko Orlovic were after a positive ending to the championship campaign while the Reds wanted to, at least, preserve their unbeaten record. Thankfully, these targets did not render the clash a complete dead rubber. However, the Reds’ motivation outweighed that of their opponents and yesterday’s 17-11 success testifies to their clearcut edge over the Saints as their 53 goals scored and 33 conceded during their three league victories and one draw against their neighbours clearly shows. This team guided by Zoran Maslovar soon realised that they were after something doable after taking the early initiative. They built a comfortable 6-1 buffer which had Jordan Camilleri netting four of five personal goals after which they played at a canter to preserve their notable advantage. In the last quarter...
