Hungary 22Malta 5 (6-3, 8-0, 3-2, 5-0) Malta found the going tough in their opening match of the U-19 European Championships as they lost to Hungary 22-5 in Alphen, the Netherlands, yesterday. The Hungarians were the stronger side on the day as they all but assured themselves of victory by the end of the second quarter and from then on they administered proceedings without difficult. Hungary raced into a 4-0 lead but Malta fought back as goals from Joseph Galea, Nicholas Bugelli and Jeremy Abela saw them cut the deficit to just one goal. But the eastern European side regained the initiative after that, netting 10 times without reply to surge into a 14-3 lead by the half-time break. Malta created other scoring opportunities but were caught out on fast breaks by their opponents before half-time. In the third session Anthony Farrugia’s players showed signs of improvement with Ben Plumpton hitting a double. But the Hungarians stamped their authority on the match by scoring five times without reply in the final quarter to wrap up a comfortable victory. “We played against one of the strongest teams here,” coach Farrugia said. “We have to learn from the mistakes committed today and...

Malta  6Montenegro  19(2-3, 1-8, 3-4, 0-4) A dismal second-session performance again proved fatal for Malta as they went down 19-6 to the strong Montenegro team in their second Group D game at the European U-19 Championships, being played in the Dutch city of Alphen aan den Rijn. Having opened their commitments with a heavy 22-5 defeat to Hungary on Sunday, the Maltese boys faced another massive task yesterday. They started the early-morning encounter on a good note as Nicholas Bugelli and Ben Plumpton were on target in a close first session which ended with Montenegro leading 3-2. The second quarter was a different story altogether as the Montenegrin players upped the tempo, producing an eight-goal blitz to all but seal their win. Miguel Zammit got Malta’s only goal. With the game as good as over, the third session was more balanced with Plumpton, Joseph Galea and Jeremy Abela finding the net for Malta but Montenegro prevailed 4-3. Montenegro scored four times without reply in the final session to increase their winning margin. Anthony Farrugia, the Malta U-19 coach, said: “Today’s performance was better than yesterday (Sunday), even though the team had to wake up at 5.30am and...

ALEX VELLA takes a look back at the 2016 waterpolo season during which Neptunes, San Ġiljan and Marsaxlokk secured the major summer honours Neptunes Grimaldi and San Ġiljan Salini Resort kept a grip on the principal summer honours as the Reds were crowned unbeaten kings of Maltese waterpolo while the Saints claimed the knock-out prize. Many were baffled by Neptunes’ success when they unexpectedly landed the plum prize to cement their name deep and big in the annals of waterpolo in recent years. They may not have always ripped through their opponents but very often they put them on the ropes with their tactical adroitness. Despite a skin-deep squad, their growing self-belief – their X-Factor – was eventually turned into great relief. According to their captain Niki Lanzon, Neptunes were the most consistent side. “We had great teamwork and showed discipline in all our games,” he said. “Our coaches deserve a lot of praise for what we achieved.” Their honours’ readings since the decade began are unequalled, having won the league, the knock-out and the winter title six, three and twice respectively for a total of 11 out of 21 available honours. They had the ideal game-changers in...

Malta 8Turkey 11 (4-3, 1-4, 1-4, 2-0) The Maltese youth team had to settle for 14th place in the Under-19 European Championship after going down 11-8 to Turkey in a ranking match from the lower half of the ladder, played in The Netherlands yesterday. Anthony Farrugia’s team did well to win the first and last sessions but Turkey showed their true mettle in the middle quarters, paving the way for their victory which meant a 13th placing in the final rankings of the tournament. Ben Plumpton scored the first of his three goals just before the buzzer signalled the end of the first quarter for Malta to take a 4-3 lead. However, that was the last time they led for the rest of the match as Turkey took over to dictate proceedings before staving off Malta’s comeback bid late on. Turkey won the second quarter 4-1 and repeated the same partial score after the interval to open an 11-6 advantage which they preserved till the end despite Malta’s bold rally to save the match. In the end, they only managed to score twice, through Nicholas Bugelli and Jeremy Abela (three goals in all yesterday), to fall short of their objective but making the final scoreline look more respectable. Malta’s other...

Azerbaijan   5Malta 9 (0-2, 2-2, 1-0, 2-5) Malta U-19 reserved their best for the last session yesterday as they beat Azerbaijan 9-5 in a classification match (13-16 places) from the U-19 European Championship, currently being played in the Netherlands. Anthony Farrugia’s team opened a 3-0 lead early on only for the Azeris to score twice before half-time and then get the only goal in the third session to cut the leeway to 4-3 before the last quarter got underway. But, the Maltese side produced a strong finale, with Jacob Sciberras, Ben Plumpton and Nicholas Bugelli scoring in quick succession to dash Azerbaijan’s hopes. Scorers: Bugelli 3, Abela 2, Plumpton 2, Sciberras 1, Galea 1. ASA president Joe Caruana Curran was satisfied with the victory, the first in the tournament, but urged the team to stay grounded. “The strides we have made and the evident progress show that we are moving in the right direction,” he said. “But, let us not believe for a minute that, having beaten Azerbaijan, is the point of arrival or where our ambitions stop. The next game will be the next challenge we want to overcome. “These matches will continue to lay the strongest possible foundations for the...

Steve Camilleri has signed a new four-year contract with Neptunes. Photo: Mark Zammit Cordina

Steve Camilleri, the Malta and Neptunes stalwart player, will again turn out for Neptunes for at least the next four years. His new contract with the Balluta Reds, the club which launched him on the big waterpolo stage as a budding 15-year old, was signed on Wednesday and has confirmed that his heart is still ticking for Neptunes. This agreement, which is bound to have lasting ripples in the local game, has thus ended speculation about his future in Malta. A much sought-after performer, Camilleri has won a total of 24 honours with Neptunes and, for many years, has represented Malta with distinction, including the most prestigious one when topping the scorers’ charts in the Euro Finals in Belgrade last January with 21 goals. As to his overseas engagements, he will again play for the Serie A1 Sicilian club CC Ortigia in the coming season. His outstanding career with foreign teams will now be extended into his ninth year. During these years, he very often etched his name as his team’s top scorer, something he has invariably done in Malta since 2008 when finishing at the summit of the overall league scorers. Among his other individual honours, the Neptunes player also won the player...

Karl Izzo

The next international commitment for a Maltese senior representative team will be in the Champions League Qualification Round I, to be played at the National Pool between September 30 and October 2. The Maltese side, as usual playing under the name of Valletta (Malta), will face Steaua Buc-harest (Romania), KS Ankonia Szczecin (Poland) and PVK Jadran (Montenegro) in Group C. It is understood that the team will be an experimental one as some key players will be absent. One of them is Steve Camilleri who is currently in full training with CC Ortigia ahead of the Italian Serie A1 season. The squad, under the charge of national team coach Karl Izzo, will be announced shortly. Izzo is expected to promote several young players who represented Malta at the European Under-19 Championship in the Netherlands earlier this month. It is interesting to note that an acquaintance of Maltese waterpolo and one of the best exponents of the game to emerge from Montenegro, Vladimir Gojkovic, will be in charge of PVK Jadran. In 2011, this versatile player, who is also head coach of his country’s senior national team, played for Neptunes.

Positive start for Valletta

An experimental Valletta team, shorn of several thoroughbreds, were off to a positive start when defeating an otherwise none too convincing KS Arkonia, of Poland, 12-2 to make it a positive start in the qualification Round Group D of the 2016-2017 LEN Champions League, yesterday. From the word go it was obvious that the Poles were not up to it even allowing for the Maltese side’s initial wastefulness, especially on extra-man set-pieces. Coach Karl Izzo rotated his units diligently throughout the four sessions and his boys all responded well, with spectacular goals coming from nap-hand scorer Matthew Zammit and Jeremy Abela, who netted twice, as did Michael Spiteri Staines. The other goals came from Zach Mizzi, Miguel and Darren Zammit. After a low-scoring first session, Valletta upped their striking tempo to make it 5-1 midway through. By then it was all over as the Polish players had no clue how to unlock the Maltese team’s rearguard who had the steady Nicholas Grixti in goal. With Valletta 7-1 ahead into the last session more fringe players were introduced including goalkeeper Jake Tanti. It had long been a stroll for the superior Maltese representative team. However, much...

The opening matches from the LEN Champions League Group C qualifying round will be played at the National Pool this evening with Maltese representative team – Valletta – in competition. The four-team mini-tournament, which comes to a close on Sunday morning, will also include Poland’s KS Arkonia Szczecin, Steaua Bucharest, of Romania, and Montenegro side PVK Jadran Herceg Novi. With a few regulars unavailable for selection, national coach Karl Izzo has opted to introduce a few new faces in his selection as Valletta start their commitments with a match against KS Arkonia Szczecin today. Tomorrow, Valletta play Steaua and they wrap up their group matches with a clash against PVK Jadran. Playing today 18.00 PVK Jadran Herceg Novi vs Steaua Bucharest; 19.15 KS Arkonia Szczecin vs Valletta.

Superior VK Jadran ease past Valletta

That VK Jadran Herceg Novi would see off Valletta even more easily than Steaua Bucharest did on Saturday was well on the cards. What was not foreseen was the emphatic way the potent Montenegro champions would dispose of the Maltese side as they stormed to a mammoth 25-1 victory. So huge was the chasm between the two sides that the chores of Jadran’s coach, Vlado Gojkovic, were limited to effecting substitutions rather than giving technical instructions to his units. To make matters worse for the Maltese players, coach Karl Izzo was unable to make use of top-scorer Matthew Zammit and the talented Miguel Zammit, who were both nursing injuries. Nevertheless, there was no stopping the visitors’ ruthless scoring machine, with nine of their 11 outfield players figuring on the scoring list. The only ponderable for the host team was whether they would break their scoring duck. That ‘distinction’ fell to Edward Aquilina who netted in the third session. Of consolation to Izzo and his coaching clan is the fact that, in this tournament, some promising talent has been unearthed or confirmed, particularly in Miguel Zammit, Jeremy Abela and captain Nicholas Bugelli who, together with...

Steve Camilleri has been voted the 2016 Player of the Year, an honour which continues to embellish the numerous individual awards bestowed on the Neptunes player. This is a record sixth time Camilleri has been voted player of the year. He already has the 2007, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015 honours in his baggage. This summer he also headed the Premier Division scorers’ list with 45 goals. Besides being top scorer in Malta every year since 2008, the 29-year-old Camilleri was the top goal-getter in the Euro Waterpolo Championship in Belgrade earlier this year with 21 goals. At the moment he is preparing for the 2016-2017 Italian Serie A1 season with Sicilian club CC Ortigia, for whom he has re-signed, making it the ninth consecutive year he has been playing in a top overseas league, very often finishing as his club’s top scorer. Last month, Camilleri renewed his contract with Neptunes for four years.

The Malta waterpolo U-17 national team left the islands yesterday on their way to Georgia to take  part in the European Championships that will get under way today. Coach Karl Izzo has selected a squad of 20 players for the continental 16-team championships that will take place at the Olympic Outdoor Swimming Pool in Tbilisi. Malta were drawn in Group A and were pitted against some top two powerhouses in the waterpolo international scene, namely Russia and Italy, as well as Turkey. “I am very pleased with my team’s preparations ahead of this important tournament,” coach Izzo told the Sunday Times of Malta yesterday. “In the last few weeks we played in the Comen Cup against the seven strongest teams on the continent and the indications from this tournament were very positive for us. “We were drawn in a very difficult group against top-quality sides such as Italy, who I think are one of the tournament favourites, Russia and Turkey. But we have shown on several occasions this year that when we are on top of our game we are capable of offering a good challenge to any team so we are looking forward to this challenge. “Surely, this tournament will be a great learning curve for my...

The Malta U-17 team after their victory over Turkey in Tbilisi on Monday.

MALTA            12 TURKEY            8 (5-3, 4-3, 1-2, 2-0) The Malta U-17 national team picked up their first ever victory in the European Championships when they beat Turkey 13-8 in their second group match in Tbilisi on Monday. It was an eye-catching performance from Karl Izzo’s boys who bounced back in style from Sunday’s 20-4 defeat to tournament favourites Italy. The Maltese youngsters built their victory on a sprightly showing, particularly in the opening two sessions which saw them open a commanding three-goal lead, 9-6. In the last two sessions, the Maltese did well to fend off Turkey’s fightback, particularly in the third quarter, to seal their win with two well-taken goals in the last session. Jake Muscat was Malta’s top performer as the Neptunes players played a starring role in front of goal when scoring six goals. “I’m so happy and proud of my players,” Izzo told the Times of Malta. “This is an historic result for Maltese waterpolo as this win will enable us to finish among the top 12 teams in Europe. This is an amazing result and it’s all the fruit of a great team performance. “Tactically my players were perfect and they played a perfect game. I don’t like to...

The Malta U-17 waterpolo national team almost upset Russia at the European Championships.

RUSSIA            14 MALTA            12 (5-2, 3-4, 4-2, 2-4) The Malta U-17 national team’s last act in the group stages of the European Championships turned out to be an honourable performance never mind a defeat at the hands of a clearly higher-ranked Russia, yesterday. The 14-12 scoreline reflected a battling display from a tiny country which has lived up to its billing of a good standing in the ranking list and followed up Monday’s win over Turkey. At one point in the third session, Karl Izzo’s boys were trailing by four goals, 12-8, and thereafter they kept fighting bravely. Malta conjured an astonishing recovery to restore equilibrium midway through the last quarter but the Russians hit two late goals to break Malta’s hearts. “I am so proud of these boys. We played one of the best games of water polo at national level,” coach Karl Izzo said. “The team were tactically perfect and it’s a pity we missed some man-up situations which would have surely made us win this game. All the players gave their best in a high-level collective team efforts. “Today we showed that Malta can play at a par against the top waterpolo nations. This was another excellent advert for Maltese...

Karl Izzo's Malta U-17 lost several scoring opportunities against Georgia at the European Championships.

MALTA            4 GEORGIA        7 (2-3, 1-0, 1-2, 0-2) Two goals in the final session ended the chances of the Malta U-17 national team to secure a top 10 placing at the European Championships as Karl Izzo’s team were beaten 7-4 by hosts Georgia in Tbilisi yesterday.  It was a disappointing outcome to a match which saw the Maltese battling toe to toe with the hosts country throughout, with the final outcome uncertain until the latter stages. However, Georgia’s superior edge in front of goal made all the difference in the end as the Maltese struggled to breach their opponents’ defence late on after missing a series of goalscoring opportunities to slump to defeat. The national team will now face the Netherlands in the play-off final for the 11th and 12th position this afternoon and will be geared up to end what has been a highly-successful participation on a winning note. In fact, Izzo’s team have already assured themselves of improving on their previous 16th placing in these continental championships. Georgia were off to a strong start and two quick goals from Besarion Akhvlediani handed them a two-goal buffer. The Maltese refused to panic and they managed to restore parity...

SERBIA          19 MALTA          4 (5-1, 5-0, 5-1, 4-2) Serbia powered their way into the quarter-finals of the European U-17 Championships when they eased past Malta 19-4 in a cross-over play-off in Tbilisi yesterday. After Malta’s sprightly showing in their 14-12 defeat to Russia on Tuesday, there were a glimmer of hope that Karl Izzo’s youngsters could offer a stern challenge to the Serbians. But in reality, Serbia gave a timely reminder of why they are seen as one of the favourites in the Tbilisi championship when they produced a ruthless display that left the Maltese youngsters helpless. Malta will now be involved in the positional play-offs from ninth to 12th place. The Serbians made their intentions clear right from the outset when they raced into a five-goal lead. The Maltese youngsters were clearly struggling to create any danger to the Serbian goal as they looked too fragile when in possession. Malta finally pulled a goal back late in the first quarter through Sebastian Busuttil. There was no let off from the Serbians in the second quarter as they completely outmuscled the Maltese with their fast swimming and sharp-shooting. In fact they managed to score five times...

Jake Muscat scored four goals but Malta U-17 lost to the Netherlands at the European Championships.

NETHERLANDS             15 MALTA             9 (6-2, 3-3, 2-1, 4-3) The Malta U-17 national team ended their commitments at the European Championships in 12th place after going down the Netherlands in the play-off for 11th place in Tbilisi. The Dutch turned out to be the better team on the day as their fast swimming and sharp shooting made all the difference on the day. The Maltese youngsters did try hard to stay in touch with their opponents, especially through the finishing of Jake Bonavia and Jake Muscat, who ended the day as the team’s leading scorers with four goals apiece, but their opponents superior stamina ensured their was no fairytale ending for Malta. Despite the defeat, there were still a lot of positives to take for coach Karl Izzo and his players who have succeeded in attaining a commendable top 12 placing in the continental championships. It’s important now, that the Aquatic Sport Association continues to support these young players who have shown in this tournament that if they continue their development they represent the future of our senior national team in the near future. Malta took some time to settle into the match as they struggled to contend with the...

San Ġiljan and Sirens both won their right to meet Sliema and Neptunes respectively in the semi-finals after easing past their opponents in the first of a possible three play-off matches. As per this year’s ASA regulations, the teams finishing above their opponents, were given a 1-0 headstart in the play-offs, which meant that both San Ġiljan and Sirens needed to just overcome Marsaxlokk and Exiles respectively once, to secure their semi-final placing. A high-scoring first session which Sirens shaded 5-4 made for a solid base that helped the northerners keep their noses in front against Exiles, conducting the scoreline throughout. In the first session, Sirens led most of the time with veteran Paul Privitera providing the main scoring guns with four goals. But it was far from a one-man show as the team managed to eke their combative qualities to twice annul a goal deficit and opening a two-goal cushion before Marko Jelaca made it 5-4. Sirens kept pegging Exiles to extend their lead to 9-6 by the half-way mark. Exiles had no answer to perpetual motion of Christian Presciutti and the versatile Valentino Gallo who both struck in the second session. Aurelien Cousin scored at both...

Infrastructure Minister Ian Borg speaking during his visit to Sirens club in St Paul's Bay.

The Planning Authority's parking and regularisation schemes have contributed €32 million in three years to the Development Planning Fund for use in community projects, Infrastructure Minister Ian Borg said on Tuesday. He was speaking at St Paul's Bay, where works have started on a major upgrade for the Sirens Aquatic Club.  The €2.2 million project is being funded by money raised by the PA.  The Development Planning Fund has already funded more than 100 projects, with a value of almost €12 million. The PA's parking scheme injects 70 per cent of its income to the Fund, while the Regularisation Scheme injects 20 per cent of its income. "It is clear that there is an authority which is always initiating schemes and initiatives to improve the quality of our buildings and of the environment we live in while taking that income and giving it back to the community. Today there are €32 million available for community projects in the Development Planning Fund," Dr Borg said. As part of the project, the Sirens Aquatic Club, has completed what is known as "the wave wall", at a cost of around €280,000. This feature is essential both for the added comfort and safety of Sirens facility users as...
